A recent study by Talita Shimoda and colleagues entitled “Visual Outcomes after Implantation of a Novel Refractive Toric Multifocal Intraocular Lens”, demonstrates the high efficacy of the M-flex® T multifocal toric IOL in achieving statistically significant visual acuity and refractive improvements as well as high spectacle independence in cataract patients.
The study published in the Arquivos Brasileiros De Oftalmologia included 34 eyes of 18 patients who underwent cataract surgery, theM-flex® T multifocal toric IOL produced favourable visual outcomes; with a corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of 20/40 or better achieved in all eyes. From the mean pre-operative value of 0.51 ± 0.33 logMAR, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) improved significantly in the post-operative period to 0.03 ± 0.09 (p<0.001). The refractive cylinder also improved significantly from -2.19 ± 0.53 to -0.44 ± 0.27 D (p<0.001).
Additionally, the vast majority of patients reported spectacle independence for near, intermediate and distance vision; at the last follow-up, 16 patients (88.9%) reported that they never required spectacles, while the remaining two patients (11.1%) only required spectacles occasionally.
