Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited announced today the appointment Martin Jamieson as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO.) Most recently, Mr. Jamieson was Managing Director of Smiths Medical International, a company employing 2,400 worldwide with a turnover of over £400 million.

After enduring a decade of poor vision, 109-year-old Guo Liansheng has been given back the gift of sight by UK intraocular lens (IOL) experts, Rayner.

Before implantation of a Rayner IOL, Madam Guo struggled to detect even the vaguest light changes. Afterwards, she was able to look into her eight-month-old great-great-granddaughter’s eyes for the first time.

Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited (Rayner) is delighted to have been included in The Sunday Times PricewaterhouseCoopers Profit Track 100, ‘Ones to Recognise’. The Profit Track ‘Ones to Recognise’ showcases a list of 10 companies that have either had, or predict, a good profit growth.

A judging panel including serial entrepreneur Luke Johnson and Fast Track’s founder Hamish Stevenson, determined the winner that will be recognised at a special award dinner.

Hove-based Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd have pledged a regular donation of IOLs every month to Sussex-based IMPACT Foundation, enabling the foundation to restore the vision of cataract sufferers in Bangladesh – improving the patients’ quality of life, preventing disability and promoting independent, sustainable living.

Christopher Liu (FRCOphth), Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, UK, delivered a presentation on Rayner’s Sulcoflex® lens at the 51st Annual Meeting of the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan on 5th December 2010.

This year’s Rayner Medal Lecture was presented by David F. Chang, MD, at the Annual Meeting of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS). Dr. Chang is an internationally recognized innovator, educator, and clinical investigator in the field of cataract surgery. 

Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited (Rayner) is pleased to note that Dr Uday Bhatt was chosen as the first recipient of the Ian Collins Rayner UKISCRS Fellowship.

The first Rayner Company was founded in 1910, when British optician Mr John Baptiste Reiner and American-born Mr Charles Davis Keeler opened their first optician’s shop at No 9, Vere Street, London, England. They registered their company as Reiner & Keeler Ltd on the 28th September 1910. Before forming the company, J.B. Reiner had completed an apprenticeship in ‘the art of an optician and scientific instrument maker’ in 1891 and had gone on to work for E.B. Meyrowitz Ltd, a branch of a well known American optical company.

Rayner celebrated 60 years of continuous manufacture of intraocular lenses at a special reception and banquet in Brighton’s Royal Pavilion today with the Award ceremony of the 2009 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.
