Ophthalmic surgeon Mr Charles Claoué, Consultant at Whipps Cross University Hospital, London, was honoured by the South African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (SASCRS) at its 10th biennial congress in Sun City. Mr Claoué was awarded the prestigious Kritzinger Medal after delivering a spirited presentation on the treatment of Presbyopia.

The first Rayner toric injectable lens was implanted by Dr Gerd Auffarth, assisted by Dr Luis Vargas. The intraocular lens was custom-made for a cataract patient with a pre-existing 6 dioptres of corneal astigmatism.

In February 2003 Rachel Yin, Export Manager for Rayner, visited Bangladesh and handed over a further donation of 50 intraocular lenses to be used on the Jibon Tari floating hospital. A trip to the London Eye for all the staff of Rayner Intraocular Lenses has helped Sight Savers charity to restore sight to more of the world’s poorest people.

To mark World Sight Day, on October 11 2001, Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd donated 425 lenses to the IMPACT Foundation, an international charity based in Haywards Heath. The lenses will be used by surgeons to restore sight to people in remote and impoverished areas of developing countries on this day.

On Friday 31st August, 2001, a Centerflex® users’ meeting was held prior to the ESCRS Congress in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This proved to be a both very enjoyable and highly informative meeting with valuable contributions being made by several eminent guest speakers. Presentations were given by Professor M. Amon (Vienna, Austria), Dr. G. Auffarth (Heidelberg, Germany), Mr. A. Vyas (Scarborough, UK), Dr. L. Vargas (Charleston, USA) and Professor D. Apple (Charleston, USA).

Following the success of “Update on Foldable Intraocular Lenses”, a one-day Symposium which was held last year in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, Rayner recently sponsored a second one-day Symposium, “Update on Foldable Intraocular Lenses 2002".

The meeting was a huge success, well attended by consultant and junior ophthalmologists coming mainly, but not exclusively, from the North of England.
