Cataract Surgery in Eyes with Nonprogressive Kerataconus: Toric IOLs can provide excellent outcomes in carefully selected patients
Posted on 06/06/2014
Julian Cezon, MD, Director of the Clinica CIMO, de Sevilla, Spain, explores the use of toric IOLs in patients with stable (non-progressive) kerataconus.
Kerataconus generates varying degrees of astigmatism and although Toric IOLs are not labelled for use in kerataconus patients, some studies have shown promising results. The outcomes from Cezon's own retrospective study consisting of 14 carefully selected patients who had stable kerataconus and were implanted with Rayner’s T-flex aspheric toric IOL supports the argument that with careful patient selection, toric IOLs can provide excellent outcomes to correct vision in eyes with non-progressive kerataconus.
