Dr José L. Güell MD from the Instituto de Microcirug“a Ocular (IMO) in Barcelona presented the 2008 Rayner Medal Lecture at the annual meeting here of the UKISCRS: United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. In his lecture Dr. Güell covered the latest developments in accurately measuring visual outcomes in “Quality of vision after corneal and intraocular refractive surgery”.

In his closing statements Dr. Güell called for a consolidation and optimization of current techniques, new ideas should be explored but cautiously and with honest objectivity. He asked the audience to remember “do not do to others what you would not do to yourself” and primarily do no harm, “primum non nocere”.

Dr. Güell joins an illustrious group; the Rayner Medallists of previous years are as follows:

That tradition continues to this day. Over the years the Rayner Medal Lecture has been presented by many of the world’s leading authorities on intraocular lenses and other aspects of cataract and refractive surgery.

The Rayner Medal is made and engraved by the London silversmith company, Spink & Son Limited, established in 1666.
