Rayner Millennium Medal presented to David Apple in Chester.
On Friday 22 September 2000, Professor David J. Apple of the Storm Eye Institute, Medical University of South Carolina presented the Rayner Millennium Medal Lecture to delegates at the UKISCRS Annual Meeting in Chester, England. In a wide-ranging presentation Professor Apple referred to the issues which continue to preoccupy his IOL-research projects at the Storm Eye Institute: PCO-reduction, silicone-oil adherence, lens-centration, lens biocompatibility, biodegradation of lens surfaces, round versus square-edge, etc. He also surveyed the new IOL materials, some of which are starting to prove successful (such as Rayner’s Centerflex®) while others are proving to be problematic.
He closed his presentation with some illustrations of complications with the LASIK procedure. Professor Apple received a standing ovation from the Chester audience.
