Sulcoflex® a new IOL-concept for the pseudophakic eye

Rayner today announced from the XXV Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) the launch of a new lens in the European and Asian markets: the Sulcoflex® Single Piece intraocular lens (IOL).

The Sulcoflex® has been invented by Viennese surgeon Professor Dr Michael Amon MD from the University of Vienna Medical School, specifically for sulcus-implantation as a secondary implant in the pseudophakic eye. Prof. Amon worked in close collaboration with Rayner to develop the new lens. The need for such a lens was clear to Prof. Amon, when he saw a growing demand for a lens which would satisfy his patients’ high expectations for an excellent refractive result following cataract surgery. sulcoflext supplementary lensesIn addition, surgeons often want to avoid IOL exchange at all costs, thus he saw the need for a pseudophakic lens.

Sulcoflex® is made of Rayner’s patented Rayacryl® hydrophilic acrylic material in a single-piece, 6.5mm diameter implant with angulated, round optic- and haptic-edges and a concave posterior optic surface. The angulated haptic has undulation designed to prevent IOL rotation.

In Stockholm, Prof. Amon presented pilot study results of six eyes (two eyes received a multifocal IOL after PRELEX and four eyes received YAG capsulotomy prior to Sulcoflex® implantation through a 3.0 mm clear corneal incision). Mean age of patients was 55 years, pre-implantation ametropia range was +2 D/-2 D and follow-up results at four months were collected.

Four-month postoperative refraction was ±0.25 D, intraocular pressure (IOP) ranged from 11 to 22 mmHg. Correct lens positioning was achieved in 100% of patients. There was no evidence of tilt or rotation.

Rayner’s Managing Director Donald J Munro commented that the company would manufacture and market this lens “not only for correction of postoperative ametropia but also with&nbspmultifocal and toric optic surfaces.” Prof. Amon confirmed that he sees possibilities in aphakia as indications for the lens, “implantation of the Sulcoflex® is safe, easy and it is less traumatic than IOL exchange.  This represents a promising, new IOL concept for a number of indications”.
