Sulcoflex® Toric IOL: Excellent Long-Term Visual Outcomes Reported in Managing Pseudophakic Residual Astigmatism

Posted on 23/03/2015

A recent clinical study using Rayner’s Sulcoflex® Toric IOL in patients with astigmatism following cataract surgery showed that this supplementary IOL provided predictable, stable and excellent optical and visual outcomes.

The paper by Drs Ferreira and Pinheiro (published in the European Journal of Ophthalmology in January this year) investigated visual acuity, refraction, rotational stability, higher order aberrations and contrast sensitivity to define the visual performance of the Sulcoflex Toric in post-cataract patients.

This prospective study demonstrated stable vision within ± 0.50 D of the target refraction in the majority of its patients. The IOL also showed long-term rotational stability, a reduction in high order aberrations and improved contrast sensitivity.

The findings show the successful use of the Sulcoflex Toric IOL in managing astigmatism in pseudophakic patients over the long-term. The authors use these results to advocate the IOL as a first-line option for a variety of patients as it provides safe and effective correction whilst reducing their spectacle dependence.
