Christopher Liu (FRCOphth), Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, UK,

delivered a presentation on Rayner’s Sulcoflex® lens at the 51st Annual Meeting of the Ophthalmological

Society of Taiwan on 5th December 2010.

Professor Liu described the history and background of the lens and its uses as a secondary supplementary lens for correcting residual spherical or cylindrical error, or adding multifocality and as a primary supplementary lens in paediatric cataract surgery. He then went on to describe the surgical technique before discussing three representative cases.

Rayner is currently awaiting regulatory approval for Sulcoflex® to be sold in Taiwan and this presentation enabled local surgeons to gain an understanding of the lens.

Professor Liu stated: ‘Rayner’s Sulcoflex® lens represents a new dawn in cataract and refractive surgery, allowing primary as well as secondary adjustments of refraction and multifocality. Its advanced material and design ensure supreme ease of use and gentleness on the uvea. I hope approval in Taiwan will be granted soon, so that patients may benefit from this great new technology.’
