UK Surgeon Charles Claoué receives the Kritzinger Medal

Ophthalmic surgeon Mr Charles Claoué, Consultant at Whipps Cross University Hospital, London, was honoured by the South African Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (SASCRS) at its 10th biennial congress in Sun City. Mr Claoué was awarded the prestigious Kritzinger Medal after delivering a spirited presentation on the treatment of Presbyopia.

The Kritzinger Safari Lecture is a highlight lecture event on the SASCRS congress programme, commemorating the life of the late Dr Michiel Kritzinger, one of the founders of theSASCRS. Dr Kritzinger died tragically in a helicopter crash on 28 April 2000. He was described by Mr Claoué as a close friend and mentor to him and a great ambassador for South African ophthalmology.

Charles Claoué (MA, MD, DO, FRCS, FRCOphth, FEBO) is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in Corneal and Refractive Surgery. Throughout his ophthalmic career he has been involved in the teaching of the subject to medical practitioners at all levels as well as to nurses and orthoptists. He particularly enjoys teaching ophthalmology to medical students and general practitioners. Mr Claoué is a Council Member of the British Society for Refractive Surgery; a Medical Director at OptimEyes Laser Consultants and a Consultant to the Al-Noor Institute, Doha, Qatar.

Mr Charles Claoué is consultant advisor to Rayner in a medical device project to improve the treatment of Posterior Segment eye disease.
