Sight restored for 26/11 Police hero of Mumbai terrorist attacks

26 November 2008 is a day police commando Venkatesh Kadam will never forget. He was badly injured in one of the terrorist attacks that rocked the city’s principal hotels and tourist attractions. He lost his sight in one eye.

But the wounded hero will prefer to remember today, when his sight was restored by one of the top eye surgeons in India and the World, Dr. Keiki R. Mehta.

2007 marks the 125th anniversary of the world-famous St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital.

To celebrate this, the hospital has launched its International Patient Relief Appeal. An icon has been created, carved out of Jerusalem stone, which is symbolic both of the Hospital’s charitable works and is a call for aid. This ‘icon’ will go on a ‘journey’ across the St John world, acting as a focal point for fundraising efforts.

The Impact Foundation of Bangladesh recently reported on the work that it has done since Rayner started to regularly supply intraocular lenses to the Foundation. The lenses are used by Bangladesh and visiting surgeons from around the world such as recent visitors, Dr Bruce Munro from Geelong, Victoria, Australia and Mr Jim Haslam, Ophthalmic Surgeon from Darlington, UK.

Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd of Hove, East Sussex is to donate an entire year’s supply of intraocular lenses to the floating hospital Jibon Tari in Bangladesh, announced Rayner Managing Director Donald Munro, whilst on a visit to that country in early January. Five hundred of the highest quality lenses will be sent entirely free of charge in the year 2001.
